Drywall and plaster repair, finished to disappear

Cracks, holes, nail pops and water stains repaired so you cannot find them after paint.

Drywall ceiling repair being sanded smooth before painting

A drywall repair is only as good as how invisible it is after paint. The difference comes from feathering compound wide enough, sanding it flat, priming so the patch does not flash through, and painting the full wall rather than dabbing a square.

We fix walls and ceilings as part of almost every interior painting job, and as standalone repairs after leaks, plumbing work or furniture damage. Plaster in pre-war homes in Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park and Capitol Hill gets plaster-appropriate repairs rather than being cut out and replaced. Larger surface work, like smoothing walls after wallpaper removal or popcorn ceiling removal, uses the same skim-coat methods, and patches on textured walls are matched through our texture work.

Drywall finish levels, 0 to 5The industry levels from Gypsum Association GA-214. Naming the level up front settles how smooth a wall will be before it is painted.

Local insight: why walls crack here

Seasonal cracks come back unless reinforced

Humid summers and dry, heated winters make house framing expand and shrink every year. Cracks at the corners of doors and windows open and close with it. Spackle alone usually reopens by next winter; tape or mesh with setting-type compound holds.

Water stains bleed through latex paint

A brown ring from a past leak will show through ordinary primer and paint. We seal stains with a shellac or oil-based stain blocker, but only after the leak is confirmed fixed, because a patch over a live leak just fails again.

Plaster can usually be saved

Old plaster that has let go of its lath can be reattached with plaster washers and screws, then skimmed. It is usually cheaper and less disruptive than tearing it out, and it keeps the solid feel and sound dampening of plaster walls.

How a repair runs

  1. Find the cause

We check for leaks, movement or impact before patching.

  2. Cut out or secure

Damaged material removed or loose plaster reattached.

  3. Tape and fill

Tape or mesh set in compound, filled in thin coats.

  4. Feather and sand

Compound spread wide and sanded flat with dust control.

  5. Prime and paint

Patch primed and the whole wall painted so sheen matches.

Drywall and plaster repair questions

Why paint the whole wall instead of just the patch?

Even with the same color, a touched-up patch catches light differently than paint that has aged on the wall. Painting corner to corner makes the sheen uniform.

How long does a drywall repair take?

Small repairs using setting-type compound can often be finished and painted the same day. Larger repairs usually need an overnight dry between coats.

Do you repair plaster ceilings?

Yes. Sagging plaster ceilings can often be reattached and skimmed. If a section is too far gone, we patch it in with new material and blend it.
